Inspired by her wandering life, that began in New Zealand, took her to the Cayman Islands, and eventually ended in an idyllic 12th century hamlet in SW France, Jan Barwick was intoxicated by color and seduced by the intricacies of nature.
A collection of Jan's works two of which are on display in the Gallery's Permanent Cayman National Gallery gift shop. They join an impressive variety of other genres and themes designed to inspire visitors to the Islands long after they leave.
Her paintings might best be described as magic realism, capturing a paradisal world, more likely to be discovered in dreams than reality. There is something primitive in their expression, echoing dreamtime. Her art always hints at etheral and transient beauty.
