Martina Zalig - Isla Clay
My name is Martina Zalig and I am the creator of Isla Clay.
I am a Slovenian living in Glasgow, Scotland. I am a trained literary translator but I have found my passion in creating colourful geometric ceramic jewellery.
I can still clearly remember the day when I first felt I wanted to work with clay.
It was on a sunny summer day when I was lying on a small hill on Berneray, a small island in the Outer Hebrides. It took a few years before I actually ordered a kiln and bought my first chunk of clay, but that feeling never left me.
There is something about the saying that nature brings you closer to your true self. Everything I know about clay is self-taught; I learned from books, internet and mistakes.
Clay is a wonderful material to work with; it’s so forgiving and the possibilities and techniques that you can use are endless.
Creating with clay relaxes me; it does the same for me like meditation or a good massage. :) I love playing with colours, so if you take a peek at my shop you will find a wide colour range. I use fashionable colours and try to adjust them to the time of the year. I’d like to think that there is something for everyone in my shop; women and teenage girls who are looking for unique everyday jewellery and those looking for something more elegant that they can wear in the evening.
My head is always buzzing with new ideas and that’s the best thing about it!
